Mycotoxins and Mold: How Fresh-Air Ventilation Helps

Mold & Mycotoxins: Can Air Filtration Help?
Part 2 of 3 | The Hidden Pollutants in Your Air: A Fresh-Air Filtration Series with LuLu
Did you know mold can release more than just spores into your home's air? Certain molds also produce compounds called mycotoxins, which can travel on airborne particles and settle into household dust.
Hi, I'm LuLu! Welcome back to our filtration series! Last time, we explored how arsenic can hitch a ride on fine dust. Today, we're investigating another unwanted passenger: mold and mycotoxins! 🌹
What Are Mold Spores and Mycotoxins?
Mold spores are tiny reproductive particles released by mold. Mycotoxins are toxic substances produced by certain molds under particular conditions.
Some mycotoxins can be associated with airborne spores, fungal fragments, and dust particles. When these particles become airborne, they may be inhaled.
Not every mold produces mycotoxins, and finding mold doesn't automatically mean dangerous mycotoxin exposure. But indoor mold growth is still a problem worth addressing!
Why Moisture and Stale Air Matter
Mold thrives in damp environments, including basements, bathrooms, crawl spaces, and areas with hidden leaks.
In tightly sealed homes without adequate ventilation, indoor moisture and airborne pollutants can accumulate.
Here's the catch: Filtration can capture airborne particles, but it can't fix a leaking pipe or a damp wall!
Can MERV 15 Filters Capture Mold and Mycotoxins?
Yes, filtration can capture mold spores and airborne particles that carry mycotoxins!
MERV 15 filters are highly effective at capturing fine particulate matter, including many airborne mold spores, fungal fragments, and dust particles.
When mycotoxins are attached to particles captured by the filter, those mycotoxins are captured along with them.
However, MERV 15 filtration is not certified to remove every mycotoxin or eliminate exposure from an active indoor mold source.
How UpgradeAirKit Filters Your Fresh Air
Good news! UpgradeAirKit already includes fine-particle filtration in its standard intake manifold!
- MERV 15: Captures fine particles, including many airborne mold spores and dust particles.
- Activated Carbon: Helps reduce certain gaseous pollutants and odors.
Extra Filtration for Challenging Air Quality
For homes in areas with elevated outdoor dust, pollution, or airborne particulates, our optional Triple-Pack Filter Box provides three filtration stages:
- MERV 8: Captures larger particles and helps protect the finer filter.
- MERV 15: Captures fine particles, including many mold spores and particles carrying mycotoxins.
- Activated Carbon: Helps adsorb certain gaseous pollutants and odors.
Three complementary filters working together to help clean incoming fresh air!
Fresh-Air Ventilation Helps, Too!
A balanced Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) brings filtered outdoor air into your home while exhausting stale indoor air.
This helps dilute airborne indoor pollutants and manage moisture through controlled ventilation. However, an ERV doesn't automatically dehumidify your home or guarantee a particular humidity level.
For mold prevention, controlling leaks, condensation, and indoor humidity remains essential. The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%.
Don't Give Mold a Place to Call Home!
Here's LuLu's fresh-air reminder: Filter the particles, ventilate the home, and fix the moisture source!
UpgradeAirKit's standard MERV 15 and activated carbon filters help clean incoming outdoor air, while our optional Triple-Pack Filter Box adds pre-filtration for more demanding conditions.
Remember, intake filtration cannot remove mold already growing inside your home. Active mold and water damage require proper cleanup and moisture control.
