What Is an ERV? Balanced Ventilation, Explained

If the air in your home feels heavy by evening, if the windows fog up in winter, or if you wake up groggy in a closed bedroom, you're running into the same problem millions of modern homes share: the house holds onto the same air instead of exchanging it. The problem: tight houses can't breathe on their own

What an ERV actually does
An ERV runs two air streams at once, in balance:
- It exhausts stale, humid indoor air from the parts of the house that need it.
- It supplies an equal amount of fresh, filtered outdoor air to living spaces and bedrooms.
Because the incoming and outgoing volumes are matched, the system is “balanced” — it doesn't pressurize or depressurize your house the way a single exhaust fan does. That balance is the whole point, and it's why an ERV outperforms just running a bath fan or cracking a window.
The clever part: energy recovery
Here's what makes it an energy recovery ventilator. As the two air streams pass through the core, the outgoing air pre-conditions the incoming air. In winter, the warm air you're exhausting gives up most of its heat to the cold fresh air coming in, so you're not heating outdoor air from scratch. In summer, it works in reverse. An ERV also transfers a portion of the humidity, which helps keep indoor comfort steady.
The result: you get continuous fresh air and keep most of the energy you already paid to heat or cool. That's the trade a cracked window can never make — an open window dumps 100% of that energy outside and stops working the moment you close it.
Why “balanced” beats the alternatives
There are cheaper ways to move air, but they come with catches:
- Cracking windows — works for an afternoon, wastes energy, and does nothing when it's cold, hot, loud, or smoky outside.
- Exhaust-only fans — pull air out but depressurize the house, so replacement air gets sucked in through walls, crawlspaces, and gaps, bringing whatever is in them along for the ride.
- Balanced ventilation with recovery (an ERV) — supplies filtered fresh air and exhausts stale air in equal measure, all day, while recovering most of the energy.
